The Family of Jesus

The purpose of this graph is not to pretend wisdom where Scripture is silent, but to help picture to ourselves the life of Him who for our salvation became incarnate and lived among men.

  1. Estha. "By Estha then, for this was the woman’s name according to tradition. Matthan, a descendant of Solomon, first begat Jacob."—Eusebius,
  2. Matthan. According to another tradition Matthan had two daughters, Anna and Soba, and a son, Jacob. Anna was the mother of Mary and Soba the mother of Elisabeth.
  3. Matthat. Eusebius. quoting Afrlcanus, says that Estha, after the death of Matthan, married Melchi, the "third from the end" of the list. However, in our texts Melchi is given as the fifth from the end. It seems that Matthat is meant. (Eusebius I, 7)
  4. Soba. The mother of Elisabeth and sister of Anna. the mother of Mary.
  5. Anna. The mother of the Virgin Mary. Of Bethlehem. Married to Hell, or Joachim, of Nazareth.
  6. Heli. Or Joachim. Of Nazareth. The name of God. Jahve, was substituted for Elohiin. Joachhn— Eliachim—Eli or Heli.
  7. Mary. The Mary in the Gospels called the wife of Alphaeus or Clopas, John 19:25. The mother of James and Joses, Matt. 27:56.
  8. Alphaeus, or Clopas. "Hegesippus records that Clopas was a brother of Joseph." (Eusebius XI, 2)
  9. Salome. Sister of Mary. John 19:25, as compared with Matt. 27:56 and Mark 15:40.
  10. Zebedee. The father of James and John. There Is a tradition which makes him a priestly descendant of Levi. (Eusebius III, 31)
  11. Elisabeth. Cousin to Mary, Luke 1:36.
  12. James. The Apostle James the Less. The early head of the Jerusalem church.
  13. Joses. Mark 6:3. Matt. 13:55, Otherwise unknown.
  14. Simon. The Apostle Simon Zelotes. "Symeon, the son of Clopas, suffered martyrdom at the age of one hundred and twenty years, while Trajan was emperor."—Hegesippus. quoted by Euseblus.(III, 32)
  15. Jude. The Apostle Thaddaeus or Lebbaeus. His grandchildren were brought before Domitian.
  16. Daughters. The "sisters" of James, Mark 6:3,
  17. James. The well-known Apostle James. Killed by Herod Agrlppa, Acts 12:2,
  18. John. The Apostle and Evangelist.
