 The Parables of Our Lord

The limits between parable, simile, and metaphor are not strictly defined. Often there is scarcely any difference. In a technical sense the word parable ordinarily signifies a complete, howbeit imaginary, story. But etymologically the word signifies the placing of two or more objects together for the sake of comparison. In a wider sense the public preaching of our Lord assumed the general characteristic of speaking in parables. "All these things spake Jesus unto the multitudes in parables; and without a parable spake He not unto them," Matt. 13:34. The following list is submitted with the explanation that it does not confine itself to parables in the strictly technical sense and that it does not exhaust the parabolic sayings of our Lord.
