He's found in the 1880 census in Reade Township, Cambria County, PA: BOWMA N, G. W. (48); wife Mary B. (45); children Benjamin F. (18); Ella W. (15 ); Rebecca M. (14); Katie S. (12); John M. C. (8); George W. (8); An na L. (5); Carrie M. (3). George was a farmer. Everyone in the household w as born in PA, as were their parents.
He's written about in the Biographical & Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria Co unty, Pennsylvania at pages 177 - 178: George W. Bowman was educated in the common schools of Mifflin county. Aft er his father's death he purchased the one-half interest in the farm fr om his brother James, and took charge of it, and has since remained on th is farm. It contains about one hundred acres, and is underlaid with coa l. In March, 1864, he gave up the life of a farmer for the trials of a sol dier, and enlisted in company D, One Hundred and Eighty-fourth regiment, P ennsylvania Volunteer infantry, and served until the close of the wa r. He took part in the following battles: Prospect Hill, Cold Harbor, whe re he was wounded in the left hip by a mortar shell; two engagements at De epbottom, on the James River, and Reams' Station, on the Weldon railroa d, where he was detailed, and drove a medical supply team until the clo se of the war. On receiving his discharge from the service he return ed to his home, and has since followed pursuits of agriculture. He is a me mber of David Troxell Post, No. 421, of Glasgow, this county; also a memb er of Allemansville Lodge, No. 900, I. O. O. F. In religious beli ef he is a consistent member of the Baptist church, and in political fai th is identified with the Republican party, and has always taken a promine nt part in local politics. He has served as school director for over thirt y-five years, and was the second president of the directors' associati on of the county; was postmaster of Roseland, this county, for seven yea rs previous to the war; has served as assessor in his township seven term s, and in 1890 was census enumerator of Reade township.
George married Mary Byers, daughter of Benjamin Byers and Unknown. (Mary Byers was born on 31 Jan 1835 in PA and died on 30 May 1922 in PA.)
