Mahala and Samuel established their first home in Cumberland, Ohio where t hey lived for a few years before moving to Plattsburg, Missouri in 1851, g oing on the Missouri River on a boat and stopping at Liberty Landin g. It is said that no house were available so Mr. Bay cleaned out a she ep cofe and reconstructed it for shelter for the time being. Among the f ew people they knew in that area was her uncle, the Rev. Hugh Dodds, minis ter of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Plattsburg. In 1902 she mov ed to Cameron, Missouri and lived there until her death.
