Eli, a prosperous young farmer of Morgan County, Ohio. He and his wife se ttle in Marietta, Ohio and soon Eli was called to service in the Union Arm y. After several months, he was released due to a heart ailment which lim ited his activities the remainder of his life. One day during the was a m an rode by and warened the family of the approach of Morgan's Raiders. Ch ristina called the boys and told them to drive the cattle, sheep and ho gs far into the back timber and herd them there unti they were called hom e. Soon the Cavalry galloped up and Eli grabbed his rifle, but Christi na pushed him back out of sight. When the Raiders met no resistance and f ound no livestock, they rode on. In 1865 the family moved to Afton, in Un ion County, Iowa. They loaded their possessions (including a large, chimi ng, 8-day, beautiful clock made by Christina's grandfather and present ed to her at her wedding) on a flatcar and traveled to Dubuque, where t he railroad ended. The rest of the journey was made by oxen and wagon. T heir farm of 1000 acres prospered and when the railroad purchased a right- fo-way from them, they were financially able to establish a mill, a chur ch and a school. The Longstreths had six children.
