Many Months; Funeral Monday

Mrs. Martha (Custer) Shaffer, aged 81, widow of David Shaffer, died t his morning at 9 o'clock at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. a nd MRs. Gilbert Stormer, of Johnstown R.D. No. 2, Conemaugh Township. MR s. Shaffer had been in poor health for several months, suffering from a co mplication of diseases.
The deceased was a daughter of Harry and Phoebe Custer, both decease d, former residents of Richland Township, where Mrs Shaffer was born Augu st 7, 1853.
Martha Custer and David Shaffer were married in Johnstown, May 8, 187 3, the ceremony being performed by John Fisher, a Justic of the Peace he re at that time. Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer spent their entire married li fe in Conemaugh Township. Mr. Shaffer died in January 193l.
Mrs Shaffer is survived by the following children: Mrs. W. H. Re am of 209 Strayer street, Harry E. Shaffer of 708 Messenger Street, Willi am Irvin of Conemaugh Township, Jacob E. Shaffer of 931 Lemon Street, Wal ter A. Shaffer of Conemaugh Township, MRs. Gilbert Stormer, at whose ho me she died; Ralph Shaffer of Conemaugh Township. Three children preced ed Mrs. Shaffer to the grave, Lizzie, Ezra, and Emory Cloyd Shaffer.
Surviving also are these brothers and sisters: U.G. Custer of Richla nd Township, Mrs. Rosanna grumbling and Misses Lizzie and Ella Custer, a ll of South Fork; A.M. Custer of 331 Strayer Street and Cyrus Custe r. Surviving also are 36 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Shaffer was a member of the Mt. Hope Evangelical Church, where f uneral services will be conducted Monday afternoon. The cortege will lea ve the Stormer home at 2 o'clock and services will be held at the chur ch at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. R.R. Doverspike, pastor, will officiate. Buri al will be in the church cemetery in chare of Howard Barefoot, Salix morti cian.

Martha married David John Shaffer, son of John Phillip Shaffer and Maria Lehman, on 8 May 1873 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset Co. PA.²³ (David John Shaffer was born on 17 Jul 1848 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset Co PA ²⁴, died on 11 Jan 1931 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset Co PA ²⁴ and was buried in MT Hope Cem, Adams Twp, Cambria Co, PA.) The cause of his death was extended illness.
