Alexander I was Bishop from about 106 to 115. The Vatican's "Annuario
Pontificio" (2003) identifies him as a Roman who reigned from 108 or 109
to 116 or 119. Christian tradition has identified him as a martyr, but
there appears to be no historical evidence supporting or refuting such a
conclusion. Eusebius, in Ecclesiastical History IV, IV, 1 states that Alexander died in the third year of the Roman Emperor Hadrian's reign, after holding the office of bishop of the Romans for ten years. |
