Obituary:

The Rev. Thomas VanScoyoc died in Mountaindale, Cambria County, of rheumat ism of the heart on Nov. 2, 1886 at age 59 years, 9 months, 6 days. He w as born in Logan Valley, Blair County, January 26, 1827, the eldest s on of John VanScoyoc and Mary Hutchinson. About the year 1843 his paren ts moved across the mountain into the wilds of Cambria County, and settl ed in a small tract of woods on the eastern slope of the Alleghenies whe re they spent the rest of their lives, and which became the property of th eir son by purchase from other heirs, where he also died. On November 1 5, 1849 he was married with Miss Nancy J. Bowman who for 35 years made h im a most devoted and helpful wife, and who preceded him to the grave on M ay 5, 1884 without issue.



A telegram received in this city yesterday announced the death of Rev. Tho mas VAN SCOYOC at his home in Mountaindale Cambria County. He had been i ll for a number of years. The announcement of his death was a great sho ck to his friends here. Mr. Van Scoyoc was born Jan 16, 1827 and would ha ve been 65 years old had he lived until January 25 next. He was a faithf ul minister of the Baptist Church aqnd one of the most prominent, influent ial and useful citizins of Cambria County. He left no family, his wife hav ing died several years ago. Services will be held at the Mountaindale Bapt ist Church. Interment in Cambria Mills Cemetery. (Altoona Tribune, Fiske I tems, Nov 26, 1886.]

Thomas married Nancy J Bowman, daughter of Benjamin Bowman and Barbara Gaff, on 15 Nov 1849. (Nancy J Bowman was born on 9 Jan 1829 in Pennsylvania, died on 5 May 1884 in Mountaindale, White Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania and was buried in Cambria Mills Baptist Cemetery, Reade Twp., Cambria County, PA.)
