History of Orange Custer: b. 5/2/1889 d. 7/24/1986
Orange's father bought the place off of Abe Spangler.
Orange moved back there in about 1913 and later sold the coal rights f or $900.00. He took this money and built the house that he and Nellie n ow live in. They built a room onto the shop and moved everything in the re while they tore the house down and built a new one. Granddaddy sa id it took about three weeks to build the house.
When he first got married he worked for a lumber camp. Later he we nt to work for the coal mines. Loyalhanna Coal Company, Poachantas, Rei tz Coal Company above Central City, McNeil in coal mines and the to Gaghe n. In between jobs he did blacksmith work with his dad. Him and Uncle Gr ant did well drilling for about 2 years. He dug coal for $0.325 per to n. At one time he worked for $0.75 for an 11 hour day.
