"There was a distressing bereavement in the family of Josiah Cust er of Taylor Township last week. Five children died within three days of d iphtheria: Priscilla, died 16 Dec., aged 2 years, 4 months and 12 days; Ma ry Ann, died 17 Dec., aged 5 years, 3 months and 21 days; Elizabeth, di ed 17 Dec., aged 8 years, 10 months and 10 days; Mary Martha, died 18 Dec ., aged 10 years, 10 months and 26 days; Susannah, died 19 Dec., aged 7 ye ars, 8 days. Sadly, the father of these children is in the Army at Suffol k, Virginia."

Josiah Custer died at his home near Holsopple, in Paint Township, Som erset County, about 6:30 o’clock Thursday morning, September 22d, aged sev enty-six years, ten months, and thirteen days. He was a veteran of the Civ il War, serving as a volunteer in Compnay I, One Hundred and Seventy-fir st Regiment. Mr. Custer is survived by the following sons and daughters: D aniel J. and Lewis J., of near Holsopple; Mrs. William Statler, of Rumme l; Mrs. Frank Lehman, of landstreet, and Mrs. Sylvester Holsopple, of Hill sboro. He was a lifelong member of the German Baptist Brethren Church. T he funeral took place at the Custer home to-day at 10 a. m., with interme nt in the Custer Cemetery.
