Hiking Photos Santa Monica Pier 3 - 02/05/2009 - Santa Monica, California | ||
Jav heard that a large school of fish was passing by Santa Monica Pier & as a result, the Sea birds & Sea lions were out in numbers. So we played hooky from work & went shooting wildlife. For some odd reason, the tide was also extremely low & all the shots were in the rain (yes, it does rain in Los Angeles) which made for some interesting shots - enjoy |

The Brown Pelicans | ||
The Pelicans would glide over the water until that saw fish & then they would dive bomb head first into the water to catch them

Brandt's Cormorant | ||
A fisherman on the pier accidently snagged one of the Cormorants with his fishing line so I helped to free the bird & got bit for my kindness - actually it was really cool to hold this wild bird in my hands. It's poor little heart was racing a mile a minute. |

You can see from the shots above how low the tide was - normally the breakers pictured in the middle photo are below water & the tide line is normally above where the sand is light. |

I have never seen Santa Monica Pier this empty |
