Paseo del Rio at Rio Hondo Spreading Grounds
A bike path that connects the existing County LARIO trail with the
City's bike lane along Mine Avenue is now complete and open to the
public 24 hours, seven days week. The bike path is part of the "Paseo
del Rio at Rio Hondo Coastal Basins Spreading Grounds" project, a
collaboration between the City of Pico Rivera and the County of Los
Angeles that began in 1999. Residents may access the pedestrian and bike
trail through Mines at Paramount Blvd.
The "Paseo del Rio" project also include the installation of wrought
iron fencing around the perimeter of the spreading grounds, perimeter
landscaping, and a shaded rest area within the Rio Hondo site.
The Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Spreading Grounds serve as water
storage/recharge facilities that conserve approximately 150,000
acre-feet of local, imported, and reclaimed water annually and consist
of 698 acres with 6 miles of proposed trails. Educational programs,
field trips and group visitors may also become a part of the project
after its completion. The project is also being developed in conjunction
with the San Gabriel and Los Angeles Rivers Watershed and Open Space
Plan in order to promote a regional river parkway that connects
neighboring jurisdictions.
Public parking is available in close proximity to the spreading
grounds on residential streets. The LA County MTA and Montebello Bus
Lines also provide fixed-route bus service that can provide visitors
with access to the spreading grounds. Thoroughfares where bus service is
provided include Paramount Blvd., Washington Blvd., Whittier Blvd., and
Rosemead Blvd.
The spreading grounds will be open to the public 24 hours a day, 7
days a week and will be free of charge. Seasonal restrictions and
possible closure of the spreading grounds will exist during the rainy
season when the water level of the spreading basins may pose a serious
threat to public safety.
